Facts About Ambazonia (Former British Southern Cameroons)

Introduction

Ambazonia, officially referred to as the Republic of Ambazonia, comprises the Northwest and Southwest regions of present-day Cameroon. These regions were previously part of British Southern Cameroons under colonial administration. Since its independence declaration in 2017, Ambazonia has sought recognition as a separate nation, though it remains internationally unrecognized.

Historical Background

  • After World War I, the League of Nations split the German colony of Kamerun into French and British-administered territories.
  • The British portion was divided into Northern and Southern Cameroons, with Southern Cameroons developing a distinct political and cultural identity.
  • In 1961, during a UN plebiscite, Southern Cameroons was presented with two choices: to join Nigeria or the Republic of Cameroon. The majority chose to unite with Cameroon, forming a federal republic.
  • Over time, the autonomy promised during unification was systematically eroded, leading to widespread discontent among the English-speaking population.

Cultural and Linguistic Identity

  • The people of Ambazonia primarily speak English and uphold an Anglo-Saxon system of education and law.
  • Their cultural and linguistic identity starkly contrasts with the Francophone majority of Cameroon, fueling feelings of marginalization.
  • These differences remain a core issue in the ongoing conflict between Republic of Ambazonia and Cameroon.

The Anglophone Crisis

  • Protests began in 2016 against the imposition of French-speaking judges and teachers in Anglophone courts and schools.
  • The central government’s violent response escalated tensions, culminating in the declaration of independence by the Republic of Ambazonia on October 1, 2017.
  • Since then, a brutal conflict has unfolded, involving liberation groups fighting for independence and the Cameroonian military.
  • The conflict has led to significant human rights violations and a humanitarian crisis, displacing over 1 million people.

Current Situation

  • As of January 2025, the Republic of Ambazonia operates as a de facto entity in some areas but lacks formal recognition.
  • The Cameroonian government maintains control over major cities, while separatist groups dominate certain rural and forested regions.
  • Peace talks and international mediation have made limited progress, with both sides accused of perpetuating violence.
